"Semana 1" -- August 10, 2016

Hey guys!

Sorry for saying I would write you last Wednesday. I was a little confused about how P-Days worked on your first week. But you should expect an e-mail every Wednesday for the next 5 weeks.

The CCM has been a cool experience. The first couple of days were definitely pretty difficult. All the staff members here are Latin American and most only speak spanish. It was really overwhelming to not be able to communicate to anyone. But my spanish is improving and we've started to try and talk in only spanish throughout our district.

My first companion´s name is Elder Syndergaard (pronounced like cinder-guard). He is a really cool guy. He and I have been practicing memorizing la primera vision and went the entire day yesterday only speaking spanish. We share Room 28-3 with two other Elders, Elder Carter and Elder Watkins. They´re both super nice and hilarious. We were all best friends within the first 3 days of knowing each other.

I´m in District 9C. I seriously love everyone in our district. We all got along really well right from the get go. One of the Elders in 9C, Elder Leloux, is a tenor sax player and played in his high school jazz band and did a little bit in college. We've talked a lot about that. We have two hermanas in our district, Hermana Wonnacott whose from Ethiopia and Hermana Sjovold whose from Norway. They are the sweetest and they both have amazing testimonies. English is their second language so learning Spanish in English has been a little bit weird for them. They are doing very well though. Everyone in our district is struggling a little with the whole spanish thing but we´re not giving up yet!

I love my maestros too. In the morning we have Hermana Balderas who teaches us fundamentals and grammar. She is really nice and she has family that lives in Arizona so we talked about that for a little bit (I´m the only Arizonan in my district). In the afternoons, we teach a fake investigator named Juan (played very well by Hermano Vavia). Afterwards Hermano Vavia gives us feedback on our spanish and teaching skills and then teaches us how to do something gospel related in spanish (offer a prayer, testify, share a scripture, etc). He is the coolest guy. He went to school in California for a while so his English is very good.

The food here is awesome. Some of it is a little strange but I don´t think I´ve tried anything that I didn´t like. Mom would love the food here. It´s all fresh and organic.:) The weather has been beautiful too. Lots of rain and cool weather!

I think that´s all I have to say! I have a limited amount of time to write in the CCM so I can´t go super in depth, but I hope you guys enjoy this. I love you all so much and I miss all of you, but I am having a blast up here (most of the time).

Mucho Amor!

Elder Travis Hicks

P.S.- Sorry I don´t have any pictures this week. We´re taking some later today so I´ll send some next week for sure!
