"Some Funny Stories" -- August 24, 2016

Hello Everybody!

This last week was a good week. I´m continuing to be amazed at how amazing my district is and how much I am learning about the gospel. Last Wednesday, we went to the temple as a district. The Mexico City Temple is HUGE and it´s super pretty. I love how each temple has its own little unique designs, like this one has a bunch of pretty Aztec-looking features. I took plenty of pictures so I´ll make sure to include those.

We met an Elder from Guayaquil, Ecuador named Elder Gonzalez. He talks really fast but I can pick up most of what he says. He told us the area we´re serving in is pretty cold and we´ll be eating "Arroz, arroz y arroz!" He was super nice and he waves to us and talks to us whenever we see him in the halls or the comedor. He also said the older citizens of Quito speak a language called Quitoan. He told us one phrase and then spelled it out for us: "Llaktata charinkapac llachamchíc" Suddenly Spanish doesn´t seem too bad.If I end up learning Quitoan, I´m totally going to speak it during my testimony in my homecoming talk!

Last Sunday I gave a talk in sacrament meeting. Our topic was to pick one of the attributes of Christ in the Predicad Mi Evangelio book and speak about it for 5 minutes... in Spanish. I actually did fairly well. Everyone else had a little bit of English mixed in but I was pretty proud of myself for staying sólo Español.

So we´ve had some funny mess-ups happen in our district while we´ve been learning Spanish. Our zone leader was saying a prayer and mixed up the words amoroso (loving) and amarillo (yellow) and said in Spanish, "Our yellow Heavenly Father". Also, my companion mixed up pecados (sins) and pescados (fish) and said in a lesson that Jesus Christ died for our fishes. Hermano Pavia started cracking up and neither of us knew why. We also had a funny mix up with Hermana Sjovold. As I´ve mentuioned before, English is her second language. She speaks it very well but every so often she will mix up a couple words. The other day, one of the hand sanitizer dispenser was out in the comedor and she told us that the comedor was all out of "hand satisfaction". It´s become sort of an inside joke now. But she´s cool with it.

Monday was my halfway point. I´ve had a lot of fun here but I´m also just ready to get out. Three more weeks to go! I love you all so much!

Elder Travis Hicks
